This Week in New Harmony

     Building Community Through Information

     March 10, 2010

J. Herbert Nelson,
named director of public witness
for the Presbyterian Washington Office
The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson II, a third-generation Presbyterian pastor, has been named the new director of public witness for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Washington Office. Nelson has 25 years of experience in congregational ministry. The past several years, he has worked in a new church development at Liberation Community Presbyterian Church, a ministry with the urban poor of Memphis, Tenn. Nelson also often preaches and serves as a keynote leader at Presbyterian youth and adult conferences.

J. Herbert Nelson is a grandchild of Lillie B. "Mother" Nelson, of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Mayesville.

What happens now?
So you are a member of one of the approximately 35 churches who attended the Ephesians Event.  According to the feedback received, you learned something from the keynote and workshops you attended.

What happens now?

Do you go back to your church and continue with your normal ways of doing things?  Or, does something change?

One session decided that something needs to change.  They have contacted each person who attended the event and asked them for one or two ideas they learned from the event they would recommend the session consider implementing.  The session plans to incorporate these ideas into its planning for the ministry of the congregation.

What happens now in your congregation?  The decision is yours.
Who is the church?
What is it called to do?
Complete Great Ends of the Church Series Available.
Quite often these days when two or more Presbyterians gather, opinions spark discourse, discussion and sometimes even debate regarding the future ministry and mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Perhaps answers could be found by looking no further than the first few pages of the Book of Order. Here, within the preliminary principles, lies a set of mission statements that are intended to define the life and work of the PC(USA). Called the Great Ends of the Church, these phrases embody the six great purposes of the church. For decades, these axioms have helped establish the course for mission and ministry, and present six basic works to our denomination that are the heart of who the church is and what the church is called to do.  [view complete PNS story]

This Great Ends of the Church series, suitable for congregational or small group study, will give renewed insight and expression to our common faith and calling. The books are available for purchase at www.pcusa.org/marketplace, or by calling (888) 728-7228, x5192.
An evening with
Ambassador Andrew Young
Montreat GateMontreat Conference Center and Montreat College are proud to announce a very special evening with Ambassador Andrew J. Young, March 22, 7 PM, in Anderson Auditorium; the same venue that hosted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he delivered an address entitled "The Church on the Frontier of Racial Tension" on August 21, 1965, to the Christian Action Conference. Ambassador Young's lecture, "Faith and Civil Rights," is free and open to the public.  For more information, call 828.669.8012, ext. 3710.
PADD donating van
Generous support of PADD has allowed them to purchase a much needed van to replace the old van.  Therefore, they have a van that they would like to donate to a church or organization in the Presbytery.

This older van is a solid white 1998 Chevrolet Express, 15 passenger van with 91,000 miles. It is functional, but will need repair on the door panels and headliner. A major brake repair was just completed. Due to the van's age and mileage additional repairs should be expected, and new tires will also need to be purchased.

If you are interested in this van please contact Bob Kearns (843-332-4765) by March 12, 2010.
